  Chapter One

The sound of the nail gun reverberating through the room made an annoying task even worse. I’d never liked the paperwork part of my job at Walker Security, but it was mind-numbingly bad now as a partner in Lisa’s and my own security firm. There never seemed to be an end to it. My only consolation was that I felt independent for the first time, not being under Brent’s watchful eye for the first time since I was sixteen.

And we weren’t even open for business yet, which meant I didn’t get to do much else yet since we moved to Corpus Christi. At first, we’d stayed in a hotel, until we found and purchased our own building. I supposed I couldn’t make fun of Brent anymore for living in the same building he worked at anymore, because we had a couple of apartments on the second floor and had moved into one of them. They’d been finished and ready a few days now, but the first floor and basement for our business were still under construction.

We’d also managed to replace both our wardrobes. I was wearing my armor more out of habit than need right now, along with a rich burgundy women’s suit with a creamy white blouse beneath.

We could have afforded a house, a mansion, if Lisa broke into her own money, but I’d insisted on paying for half, which was why we were living in apartments in the office. I’d pretty much sunk my savings into the business and a new wardrobe.

Both Lisa’s and my offices were finished though, and we had our computer and phone systems up. I felt a little trapped at the moment, but I knew if I went outside all the men would stop working and start eye fucking me, again. I didn’t mind being checked out, I was used to it, but Lisa and I really wanted the work finished, which would only take a day or two longer. So long as I stayed out of view, that is.

The second floor had the two apartments, the first floor had the entry room, work out room, five offices, and a few conference rooms as well as a break room. It was enough space to hire two or three people, we’d never be as big as Brent’s operation, but Corpus Christi was tiny compared to Dallas, and it could never support that large of an operation. The basement had endured the most construction and changes, and it had been split off into several rooms. Our cells, armaments, and other storage would be down there.

It’d been almost a month since my dragon form had been outed on YouTube. There’d been a whole lot of speculation about the incident, but no proof it was actually me in the human world. Of course, for the dragons, it’d been enough for them to investigate. So far, my father was still alive, and hadn’t been attacked, so I guessed he’d be safe enough as long as I wasn’t captured. They probably needed my body, dead or alive, to prove paternity with magic before they could judge him, at least that was my hope.

My new look could still be a bit startling when I looked in the mirror. When I had my father’s necklace on, I had golden blonde hair and blue-green eyes thanks to Harold’s enchantment, instead of ash-blonde and blue, and it also gave me slightly lighter skin tone with subtle changes to my face good enough to throw off facial recognition software. I wasn’t sure I liked it, but Lisa didn’t seem to mind, and assured me often I was still her hot slut. I did look good of course, but it wasn’t me.

I was resigned to the fact I couldn’t go back to my appearance for a long time, perhaps centuries.

Lisa looked different as well, darker skin, dark brown hair instead of raven black, but she still had those warm and crazy doe eyes. Her face was a little different, and I liked her new look, she was still my crazy and violent little sexpot.

Of course, we’d had to change our names too, it wouldn’t have worked otherwise, hiding right underneath their noses like we were. Lisa went by Hannah Camden, which was her original first name, one that the vampires weren’t aware of, at least, not the ones left alive. It was also close to her old last name of Campbell. As for me, I’d become a Jones instead of a Smith, and Lisa had suggested the first name Aria, kind of a play off my real name, Melody, since both names equate to songs. She hardly ever uses it, but when she does, she calls me Ari for short. I’ve sort of gotten used to answering to it, but she still calls me love, or slut, far more often.

Our new company would be Camden and Jones Security Services.

Brent had been able to transfer all our monies, and also get us solid identities under the new names that would bear up under scrutiny. We’d been assured we’d pass a background check, and we’d already applied to be supernatural government agents under subcontract. That would be a long process though, we’d have to work for a while as basic private investigators and establish a reputation before they’d even consider contracting us.

The only thing that could really tie us to our old identities was the fact that we were a siren and vampire partnership, both lovers and in security, which had to be damned rare. Lisa was able to control her vampire aura however, so it was highly doubtful the small local coven would identify her as an ancient vampire. Another plus was the necklace disguised my dragon scent side, so my scent was pure siren now. It was fairly well known in Dallas and to anyone looking, that Melody Smith had a strange scent that marked her as more than siren, hopefully that would all be enough to throw anyone off the trail.

The song of the world around me was very loud so close to the ocean. I wouldn’t say I felt threatened at the idea of losing myself in it, I could stay focused and on task with minimal concentration, but if I was just relaxing and not doing anything but letting my mind wander, its allure could draw me in, and an outside distraction would be needed to bring me out of it. Nothing major, hunger, thirst, a small sound, a voice, or even the song of a nearby sentient.

My magical strength as a water dragon was also stronger by the water, and increasing at a faster rate, I had to be cautious with my thoughts. It was almost too easy to use my water dragon magic, and whenever I did I was at risk of detection, the necklace that hid me couldn’t hide my active magic, only my passive quiescent magic, dragon shifter scent, and identity through the glamour. It was almost amusing to me how disciplined of mind I was becoming, something that would have been impossible to me just two months ago, I was still becoming a different person.

I still hoped to learn new things about both my sides, but that would come with time and experimentation. I already had a few leads about my siren side, hearing the personal songs of sentient beings more clearly had given me a few ideas the last couple of weeks, I just needed to experimen
t.

It also helped, that my siren side was so well fed on a nightly basis by Lisa, if not more often on some days, and I hadn’t slept in over five weeks. It seemed like I should be going crazy without sleep, but in truth I felt far more centered than I ever have before. Without that I’d have never been able to control my water magic as well as I have been, if still not perfectly.

Still, I missed the risk and thrill of doing my job and facing down the bad guys and kicking ass. I couldn’t wait before we could open the doors and start taking cases. I was also a little worried about Carol Martin, I was sure she wouldn’t appreciate the competition, and she was the one to beat. She owned the best security firm in the city, and the only one that currently had government contracts.

I looked up as Lisa walked in with a travel mug of coffee in her hand, she put it on my desk. She was in a tight clingy dark blue blouse, and a black skirt with white designs.

  Chapter Two

  “You’re a goddess.”

Lisa smirked, “I just know you. You’d have gotten up any minute for more coffee, and all the workers would stop to flex and stare at your tits and then your ass as you walked by.”

I had been thinking about going to the breakroom and getting a coffee, my mug had been empty for at least twenty minutes. I always had energy recently, and didn’t sleep, but I didn’t think I’d ever kick that habit. Of course, it had been the irritability of starving my siren side of energy, that had addicted me to coffee in the first place. I’d needed all that caffeine and sugar to function.

Lisa added, “Don’t get used to it, slut. You can get your own coffee when the workers are done.”

I smiled, the way she said slut was warm and loving, it was absolutely ridiculous, but we still hadn’t worked out new pet names. It also made me a little wet, which gave the pet name a certain veracity. Maybe the most ridiculous part was it also made my heart sing to hear the endearment, though I’d never admit that latter fact. We were both probably insane, but I loved her as much as she loved me. Which was a good thing, because she promised to kill me if I ever left her. I’d say that was crazy, but I pretty much felt the same way about her leaving me. It also made me feel warm inside, maybe that made me crazy, but it made me feel possessed, safe, and wanted. It made me feel loved.

“Thanks, bitch,” I said far too breathily.

Lisa smirked, “I’ll be calling you in a few minutes, Mage Tony Jorgen is coming in for an interview in a few.”

Yeah, the first few times I sat in on the interviews, which had turned out to be disastrous and unfair. If it was a guy, he was distracted by me, and if it was a woman, she either got closed off or nasty. Even the men that handled that kind of thing better than most, were still affected by me. Better for the siren not to be part of the interview process. Or at least, not in the same room, as absurd as it sounded, we’d be video conferencing ten feet apart, through a single wall. It would be enough, he wouldn’t be affected by my pheromones.

  “Which position?”

We had two positions open for a mage type. We needed one in the office, warding our building and vehicles, and enchanting our armor and weapons. Since there’d only be a few people to keep that up for, the internal mage position would also be an office manager, and he or she would interface with our clients when Lisa and I were out on the job.

The second position was outside work. We wanted to offer decent low-end wards to businesses, for those that wanted protection but couldn’t afford the exorbitant fees of people like Martin security or even Harold who offered the cutting edge in magical protections. It’d be guaranteed to protect the business from human, elven, shifter, and vampire level mischief, if not from a powerful mage that could overpower or twist the wards. There was also the matter that sometimes a mage just fit a type of job better than a siren or vampire would.

Lisa shrugged, “I didn’t ask, we’ll find out during the interview.”

I wasn’t all that surprised, she preferred to gather all that information in person, where she could pick up scent and heartbeat to better judge the applicant and the truth of their words.

Tony Jorgen was six foot one, and he had short dark brown hair and brown eyes. He was average in appearance, neither muscled or skinny, but appeared in decent shape. He wouldn’t stand out in a room of men, but he was passably attractive. He looked to be about twenty-five, which matched his application. He was wearing the typical mage robes that all mages seemed to prefer, and his were dark blue. He looked a little nervous as he entered Lisa’s office, and then did a double take and his eyes widened when he saw me on the wall’s flat screen monitor.

Good to know I was still attractive, even without my siren magic and pheromones.

Lisa said, “Take a seat Mage Jorgen.”

He recovered without being all that awkward about it, and he sat across the desk from Lisa. The wall’s flat screen was to the right of her desk, so I saw them both in profile.

  Tony said, “Good afternoon.”

Lisa smiled faintly to put him at ease, “Let me tell you a little bit about what we’re doing here. We’re starting up a modest operation of four to five people, that means we may expect job duties to be rather broad in comparison to a larger company. We also won’t be overly formal, but we will demand respect for any beings in our workplace. May I call you Tony?”

  Tony nodded, “Yes.”

Lisa said, “You can call me Hannah, and my partner is Aria,” she waved at the wall monitor, “We’ll be a private firm at first, but we’re already working toward approval for government work. What position are you applying for?”

Tony replied, “The office position. My strengths are in protection and enchantment. My magic is strong, but not geared toward the offensive side of the spectrum.”

He’d seemed almost plaintive about it, and I had a feeling that had been a major obstacle to him being hired in the past.

Lisa nodded, “In addition to enchanting our body armor and weapons, along with warding the office and vehicles, we would expect you to deal with clients, and keep an eye on the office.”

Tony seemed to visibly relax at that point, and I guessed I was right. Most interviewers had probably dismissed him for not being flexible enough with his magic to be in the field, but our needs were different. Neither Lisa nor I wanted to be stuck in the office and dealing with clients, like most owners would be, we were both a little too violent in our tendencies for that and wanted the rush of being out in the field. It was apparent to me Lisa was itching for a good fight after being idle for a month, and I wasn’t far behind. My love was still violent, and a little crazy, that hadn’t changed, and I missed the challenge of a good case.

More than that, Lisa didn’t suffer fools, and neither did I. In addition, a siren interfacing with customers would be problematic at best, we needed someone else to do it.

“That I can do, it sounds like a perfect fit for me. I minored in business in college.”

He was definitely more relaxed and confident, I could hear it in his song. The thin walls were hardly a deterrent. The interview continued with all the usual questions, and none of his answers were throwing up red flags, and his voice was pleasant and confident which would help with clients.

Lisa looked at me and I nodded faintly, based on his resume and needs, he seemed to fit what we needed better than anyone else we’d talked too. Most of the other mages would have chafed at being stuck in the office all the time, and in being asked to do office work. Tony appeared to be thrilled with the idea.

Lisa asked, “We’d like to make you an offer, but first, do you own a home?”

He blushed, and looked a bit confused by the question, not to mention uncomfortable. Why that was, was apparent with his next words.

“Actually, I haven’t moved out of my childhood home yet, since I finished college just last year, and getting my career started has been something of a struggle.”

Lisa smiled, “The reason I ask is there’s a second apartment upstairs. We’d like to
offer you the option to live here, along with a modest salary as part of your benefits package. It’s optional, but we would prefer you make this building your bastion as a mage. The apartments have their own external entrances.”

It was somewhat sneaky. Mages warded the shit out of their homes, and if he lived there in the building, he’d do a better job protecting the building, and the wards would grow in strength faster if he wasn’t splitting his efforts and was here to feed it magic all the time. At the same time, it would save us a little money, and fill the empty apartment.

Tony frowned, but then nodded in understanding, “That’s… clever, and I have no objections. How modest is modest?”

Lisa smirked, and wrote a number down on a pad, and passed it over.

Tony’s eyes widened a bit, it wasn’t the biggest salary, but it was still very generous considering he wouldn’t have rent, electric, gas, water, or other home related expenses. We’d even get him his own number on the phone system and pay for cable. In a lot of ways, it was very generous for someone just starting their career.

He asked, “When do I start?”

Lisa said, “How about now? Construction will be done in a couple of days, and we’ll be ready to open the doors. I’d like the building and vehicles warded, and our armor and weapons enchanted before that happens. It shouldn’t be hard to maintain things after that.”

  Tony nodded, “That works.”

Lisa replied, “Excellent, welcome aboard. Let me give you a tour, show you where everything is, and your new apartment, then you can fill out some forms and get started. You can also meet my partner now that the business is out of the way.”

He’d eventually get used to being around me, but even then he’d never be completely himself with me in the same room. It was only fair to hire him sight unseen, if he’d met me in the interview, he’d have agreed to just about anything to work with me, in the hopes of getting me in bed. I loved being a siren, but sometimes the difficulties could suck, and not in a good way.
